SONGS FOR GIRLHOOD.
125
THE SEA. Barry Cornwall.
The sea is a jovial comrade!
He laughs wherever he goes, And the merriment shines in the dimpling lines
That wrinkle his hale repose. He lays himself down at the feet of the sun,
Aud shakes all over with glee; And the broad-backed billows fall faint on the shore,
In the mirth of the mighty sea.
Bnt the wind is sad and restless,
And cursed with an inward pain ; You may hark as you will, by valley or hill,
But you hear him still complain. He sobs in the barren mountains,
And wails on the wintry sea; He shrieks in the cedar, and moans in the pine,
And shudders all over the aspen-tree.
Welcome are both their voices!
And I know not which is best The laughter that slips from Ocean's lips,
Or the comfortless wind's unrest.
There's a pang in all rejoicing,
A joy in the heart of pain; And the wind that saddens, the sea that gladdens,
Are singing the self-same strain!
COWPER'S GRAVE.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
It is a place where poets crowned may feel the
heart's decaying; It is a place where happy saints may weep amid
their praying; Yet let the grief and humbleness as low as silence
languish ; Earth surely now may give her calm to whom she
gave her anguish.
O poets, from a maniac's tongue was poured the
deathless singing! O Christians, at your cross of hope a hopeless hand
was clinging! O men, this man in brotherhood your weary paths
beguiling, Groaned inly while he taught you peace, and died
while ye were smiling!
